Bernard Ashley

Former teacher and headmaster Bernard Ashley’s first novel, The Trouble with Donovan Croft, was published in 1974 and won the Other Award. Bernard has since written more than thirty further novels and has been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal three times. He has written for television and adapted his novel Little Soldier into a play. His book Dreams of Home was shortlisted for the 2015 Little Rebels Award.
Bernard has a reputation as a 'gritty' writer and his writing is realistic, reflecting life around him. Now in his 80s, Bernard still lives in Charlton, south-east London, only a street or so from where he was born.
