We’re delighted, thrilled and cock-a-hoop that Savita Kalhan’s latest novel with Troika, That Asian Kid, has just been nominated for the 2020 CILIP Carnegie Medal.

The CILIP Carnegie Medal is awarded to a book written in English for children and young people that creates an outstanding reading experience through writing.

Each nominated book will now be read by every member of the judging panel – which this year includes 14 children's and youth librarians from CILIP's Youth Libraries Group − to decide the long and shortlists (20 February and 19 March 2020) and finally, the 2020 Medal winners (17 June).

“A bold new contemporary YA novel, [That Asian Kid] deals with issues of racism and microaggessions without pulling any punches,” says YA blog Reading Through Infinity.

“Recent research has highlighted the lack of diverse representation in central characters in books and films,” notes online children’s literature zine LoveReading4Kids. “So, this book is doubly important – not only do we have an Asian central character but the main issue at the heart of the book is the power of social media and the challenge to behave in an ethically responsible way - to do the right thing”.

Our huge congratulations to Savita and to all of the 2020 nominees.
